crochet granny square tote bag FREE PATTERN

 This pattern is for a tote bag just like the ones in urban outfitters at the moment. I'd describe the skill level as advanced beginner. It turns out super cute and roomy to fit all your stuff in.

note: everything is in UK terms

ABBREVIATIONS:
ch = chain
ss = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
one cluster = 3dc

YOU WILL NEED:
- approximately 400g of yarn in multiple colours (I used black, cream, beige, purple, pink, green and yellow)
- 3.5mm hook
- scissors
- yarn needle

GRANNY SQUARE:

before starting choose the main colour for your bag, this is the colour on the outside of every square and the colour of your strap. This means that colour E should always be the same colour.

round 1:

with colour A make a slip knot. Ch 4. Join to the first chain with a ss to form a loop. Ch 2, 2dc into the loop, ch 2, *3dc, ch2* 3 times. ss to starting ch 2. Change to colour B and cut off colour A, leaving a tail.

round 2:

with colour B ch 2, 2dc, ch 2, 3dc into the ch 2 space below, ch 1, *3dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch 1 into the next ch 2 space* three times. ss to starting ch 2. Change to colour C and cut off colour B, leaving a tail.

round 4:

with colour D ch 2, 2dc ch into the ch 1 space, ch 1, 3dc into the ch 1 space below, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) into the next ch 2 space, ch 1 *3dc into the ch 1 space below, 3dc into the next ch 1 space below, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) into the next ch 2 space below, ch 1* three times. ss to starting ch 2. change to colour E and cut off colour D, leaving a tail.

round 5:

with colour E ch 2, 2dc ch into the ch 1 space, ch 1, 3dc into the next ch 1 space below, 3dc into the ch 1 space below, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) into the next ch 2 space, ch 1 *3dc into the ch 1 space below, 3dc into the next ch 1 space below, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) into the next ch 2 space below, ch 1* three times. ss to starting ch 2. fasten off, leaving a tail.

make 13 squares, with different colour combinations but always keep colour E the same.

STRAP:

round 1:

with colour E ch 9, hdc in the second chain from the hook, ch 1

repeat round 1 until you reach double the length you want for the strap. For me this was around 23 inches.

make another strap.

ASSEMBLY:

with the wrong side out, attach the squares to each other. refer to the diagram below.

attach one end of the strap to the top of the bag at the tip of the top square. attach the other end of the strap to the tip of the other top square on the same side. repeat with the other strap.

weave in ends and you're done!! I hope you love your new bag, feel free to show me what you've made.
